Cooking For Dogs:

Detoxing With Beets & Parsley

by Virginia Dunn
October 2007

The seasons are starting to change, and that's always a good time to do a cleanse. Two of the best things I know for doing this are fresh beets and parsley.

Beets are a natural liver and blood detoxifier. They are great for providing a nice overall health tonic - for people and for dogs. (Come on - you know you love your beets!)

Likewise, fresh parsley is excellent for flushing out toxins and providing healthy energy. It also has natural chlorophyll to combat bad breath. Does that mean I've solved the canine bad breath mystery? I wish! HA!

__________ INTO THE POT! __________

Today we got out our big stock pot and loaded it up. I used 2 pounds of ground beef, one full bunch of raw beets, including the greens! Just chop them up and throw them in. Some fresh chopped parsley. Gingerroot. Garlic. And some brown rice. Add water and bring to a boil, then turn down the heat and let it simmer for 45 minutes. I do this in the morning and then give it the day to cool, so the dogs don't burn their tongues at dinner.

This meal looks weird when it's done because the rice turns a beautiful shade of pink. COOL!

But be careful when you feed this meal. Often times it tends to 'push' accumulated toxins out of the dogs body. Make sure you provide extra water and you might want to take them outside a couple of extra times during the night.
