Satin Balls - This tried and true recipe is the best thing I know to put weight on your dog. Whenever I have a bitch in heat, my males worry themselves down to nothing. This is the perfect time to use Satin Balls. Maybe you have a pup who just experienced a growth spurt and now looks skinny! (Seems like that happens over night.) Or a dog that is a hard keeper. A rescue that has been underfed. Or a dog that has been off their food and needs to put on weight. There are many instances where these little beauties can really help a dog.
Satin Balls will put weight on your dog very quickly, usually within just a few days. But be careful that you don't feed too much or you may end up with a big fat dog! Satin Balls also can really help the texture of a dogs coat, especially if they've been consuming cheap kibble. It lends a nice shine and luster - what you would see on our raw-fed dogs naturally!
__________ INTO THE PAN! __________
Get out your BIGGEST pan - preferably a very large turkey roaster or giant lasagna pan. Trust me, you will need the room!
Now gather your ingredients. Here goes:
10 pounds Hamburger - the fattiest you can find. (I use 30% fat)
1 Large Box Total Cereal
1 Large Box Oatmeal
1 Jar Wheat Germ
1 1/4 Cups Unsulfered Molasses
1 1/4 Cups Vegetable Oil
10 Raw Eggs with the shells
10 Envelopes Unflavored Knox Gelatin
Okay, that's a lot, so here's how to break it down into manageable chunks.
- First, throw your eggs (shells and all) into a blender, along wtih your mollasses, gelatin and vegetable oil. Whirl these up until smooth.
- Next, pour your Total cereal, oatmeal, and wheat germ into the pan and stir up until combined.
- Add the wet ingredients in the blender and mix together with your hands.
- Now add the hamburger to this mixture.
It's a lot like making a huge meatloaf! Keep mixing until you have a uniform consistency. Then start rolling handfuls of this mixture into softball sized rounds. Put in quart freezer bags - usually 3 - 4 will fit in a bag - and freeze.
__________ HOW MUCH DO I FEED? __________
As a general rule, I feed my dogs twice a day. They get raw meat and bones, and the occasional dog stew. If I am supplementing with Satin Balls, I give these as an extra meal in the afternoon. Usually I feed 1 or 2 Satin Balls per day. Mine are good sized so it makes a whole meal.
If you have smaller dogs, you can make the balls smaller and more appropriate for their size. You be the judge as to how much they need. Some people feed this recipe to their dogs for extended periods - if you do this, keep a close eye on them to make sure they don't gain too much weight.
Happy feeding and enjoy your satin balls!
